SURLY DARKNESS DAY

It’s that time of the year again. DARKNESS DAY.

Saturday, October 15th, people will descend on Surly’s Brooklyn Center brewery, the location of the original event, for this anticipated event.

Surly Brewing Co.

4811 Dusharme Dr, Brooklyn Center, Minnesota 55429

Darkness Day is dedicated to the release of Surly’s Russian Imperial Stout. Back in the day, this aged, strong ale would sell out immediately to the people that stood in line at the event.

The event will feature Food Trucks, Live heavy metal, and a ton of Surly beers available ($5).

The real feature though is getting your hands on that sweet Imperial Stout. 750mL bombers are $20 CASH and will go to the 1st 1500 people in line (which starts the night before…more info below).

Where the Cool Kids Are: The Night Before (Camp-out)

If you’re really in to beer, you’ll want to get out your warm-weather camping gear for the camp out and party the night before.  The line of 1500 starts at 4pm (though you’ll have to wait until dark to pitch your tent).

There will be a ton of people doing this, as over the years, it has become more fun and more a highlight than the actual day itself.

It’s a literal tailgating shanty town, complete with games, grills, gourmet food, fire pits; Think: “Burning Man for Beer Geeks” – yup.

One thing you’ll want to bring, along with warm clothes, is some rare, hard-to-find beers.  People are happy to trade, sample, and share some rare finds from around the country, but you’ll have to have something of value too.

DO I HAVE TO CAMP OUT IF I WANT TO BUY THE BEER?

Most likely NO.  Surly has been brewing a lot more in the last few years, so although the event may run out, you’ll still be able to get it at some choice liquor stores, and Grumpy’s NE usually scores a keg too.

This video from 2014’s Darkness Day pretty much sums it up.
